THE BASICS

Beach Bag – Most luxury hotels provide complimentary beach bags in the hotel rooms; however, I always bring my own. I prefer a mesh option, so the sand stays on the beach and is not carried into my hotel room and suitcase.

Cash – Only a few all-inclusive hotels have a full-stop ban on cash tipping. For all other hotels, it is nice to have some cash on hand to show your appreciation for anyone that goes above and beyond. I like to carry $10-$20 USD in singles for every day of my trip. A small gratuity is also standard practice for your aiport transfer driver or taxi.

Copies of your passports, credit cards (front and back), medical cards, prescriptions, and anything else that would be helpful if you lost the original. I always pack a copy of my passport in a separate bag from where my passport is packed.

Hats – Don’t forget to pack one for every member of the family. The tropical sun is brutal.

Outfits – A typical day at a beach resort can involve 2 to 3 wardrobe changes. Breakfast and lunchtime could be workout clothes or a swimsuit and coverup. Dinner is usually a sundress or skirt for the gals while guys wear slacks and collared shirts for finer establishments, or shorts and tees if venturing out to eat local.

Long Sleeve Shirt, Sweater, or Light Jacket -It’s a common misconception that the Caribbean, Mexico, and other tropical destinations are warm 24/7. The evenings can be quite cool – sea breeze on sun-kissed skin will make 75 degrees Fahrenheit feel much cooler.

WELLNESS

Bug Spray – While all the best resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, and beyond maintain a mosquito prevention regimen, you will likely find yourself looking for bug spray should you do an off-property excursion or spend an extended amount of time on the beach at dusk.

Disinfecting Wipes – these have two very different purposes for being in my travel bag – to wipe down surfaces on the airplane as soon as you board and before or after eating from beach stalls or food trucks.

Reef Safe Sunscreen – Sunscreen is one of the highest-priced items in resort gift shops, so pack your own. Please do our oceans a favor and make sure your selection is safe for coral reefs. I usually travel with 3-4 sunscreen items per trip.

First Aid Kit – a few band-aids, ointment, safety pins, and medicines for headaches and upset stomachs can make treating a small issue very simple.

Medical explanation Card – if someone in your party has an allery or other medical issues, it’s wise to bring some cards explaining it in the native language of your destination. This way, you are armed with something to show the waitstaff or hotel staff if there is a language-based communication concern.

Vitamin C – travel equals germ exposure friends. When you combine that with late nights and increased alcohol consumption, you could bring home more than just memories and souvenirs from your vacation. A box of single-serve vitamin C supplements accompanies me on every trip.

Clips – so many uses for these! Most hotel blackout drapes have a fatal flaw – they don’t quite meet up in the middle. Stick a clip on there and avoid that tiny sliver of light pulling you out of a deep morning sleep. A large enough clip can also keep your towel in place on your beach chair if it’s a windy day.

Jewelry Organizer – A travel jewelry case does the best job of keeping necklaces secure if you want to avoid arriving with a tangled mess.

Over Door Shoe Organizer – hang it on the bathroom door; it is perfect for storing all of the small kid stuff that you don’t want strewn around your room. It also creates more storage space for families traveling together with 3-4 people sharing the same bathroom.

Packing Cubes – total game changer! You can unpack in less than 5 minutes when everything is already organized. I pull these right out of my suitcase and into the drawer – done!

Reusable Ziploc Bags – every size, and lots of them. Great for keeping your phone, cards, and cash safe on the beach, and for sticking wet clothes or seashells in for your trip home.

Secure Card Wallet – if you plan to leave the hotel and explore the local markets of other populated areas, a secure card wallet is a good idea to protect your plastic from being scanned and duplicated without your knowledge.

Travel Steamer – some luxury hotels have started providing them. I find these work better than any hotel room iron so it is worth the space in my suitcase.

Waterproof Phone Case – a sand, water, and slimy kid hand-proof phone case is one of the best things I’ve recently thrown in my suitcase.

Waterproof Speaker – booked a private plunge pool suite? You might be wishing you had a little soft music as the background for what will surely be the most relaxing hotel room you’ve ever stayed in.

Nightlight – or two if you have a 2 bed/2 bath suite.

Snorkel Gear – I bring my own full face mask gear when I travel. I don’t like the standard snorkel masks and that other people are using them.

Binoculars – especially when you have an ocean view room, binoculars can help you spot dolphins and other marine creatures, boats, etc.

Charging Station – if you are traveling with multiple devices or with a family, you will want to be prepared with a quick way to keep everyone charged.

When preparing for a romantic island getaway, packing efficiently and thoughtfully can eliminate stress while on your vacation as well as enhance your overall experience. Here are my packing tips for an easy breezy island getaway with your plus one!

*Light, breezy clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, or silk. Opt for flowy dresses, skirts, shorts, and loose shirts to keep cool and comfortable in the tropical climate. Wrinkle-free fabrics are my personal favorite, but if you can’t part with a favorite dress and it wrinkles easily, pack a mini garment steamer. Amazon sells them for around $30 and they are very effective.

*Swimwear: Don’t forget to pack your favorite swimsuits! Pack a few options so you can switch it up throughout your trip. If you plan on engaging in water activities like snorkeling or scuba diving, bring appropriate gear if you don’t want to use the resort’s. I also recommend bringing a pair of water shoes.

*Sun protection: The sun can be intense on islands, so pack essential sun protection items such as sunscreen (with a high SPF), sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a cover-up or sarong for additional sun shielding. Remember sarongs and cover-ups can also double as outfits for day or night if they are styled correctly and not too sheer.

*Romantic attire: Consider bringing a few elegant outfits for romantic dinners or special occasions. A nice dress or a smart outfit for men can add a touch of sophistication to your getaway. Be sure to check your resort’s website for any dress codes or theme nights. Insider tip: many Caribbean resorts have a “White Night”.

*Comfortable footwear: Island destinations often involve walking on sandy beaches or exploring nature trails. Pack comfortable shoes like sandals, flip-flops, or lightweight sneakers. If you plan to go hiking, bring appropriate footwear for that as well. For evening, bring one pair of versatile sandals with a low heel that you can wear with all your dinner outfits. Wedges or metallic slides are great choices for women.

*Travel-sized toiletries: Instead of carrying full-sized toiletries, opt for travel-sized bottles to save space and comply with airline regulations. Don’t forget essentials like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer, and any specific items you may require. They take up much less room in your luggage as well.

*Insect repellent: Island environments and beaches often have mosquitoes or other insects like noseeums. Pack an effective insect repellent to protect yourself during outdoor activities or evenings. Insider tip: noseeums cannot penetrate the oil barrier of baby oil. Pack some Skin So Soft.

*Snorkeling gear: If you enjoy snorkeling, consider bringing your own mask, snorkel, and fins. While some resorts may provide these, having your own ensures a proper fit and adds convenience. I bring my full-face mask snorkel on most of my island trips, as the regular masks fill up with water too quickly.

*Entertainment: Bring along a book, e-reader, or any other form of entertainment for downtime. Relaxing on the beach or by the pool with a captivating read is a luxury for many busy couples.

*Travel documents: Don’t forget to carry your passports, travel insurance information, flight tickets, hotel reservations, and any other necessary documents in a safe and easily accessible place.

*Electronics and chargers: If you plan to bring electronic devices like cameras, smartphones, or laptops, remember to pack their chargers, adapters, and any necessary cables.

*Romance essentials: To add a touch of romance, consider packing a few items like scented candles, massage oils, or your favorite romantic playlist to create a special ambiance in your accommodation.

Nestled in the middle of the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, Antigua is a dream destination for sailors, yachties, history buffs, and beach bums. I was mesmerized by the island’s captivating charm, its nautical ports, the warmth of the island’s locals, and the stunning vistas at every turn. Here are my top reasons to visit Antigua now!

The Beaches

Antigua boasts 54-miles of exquisite coastline outfitted with 365 stunning beaches, one for every day of the year. Half Moon Bay is considered Antigua’s most instagrammable beach, with milky white sand and water so blue it almost glows. Bodysurfers enjoy the south end, while snorkelers head to the calm waters north. Half Moon Bay Beach also houses two of the best bars on Antigua for grilled fish and rum cocktails.

Feeling adventurous? Head south to one of Antigua’s most remote beaches at Rendezvous Bay. Located along an undeveloped chunk of coastline, Rendezvous Beach is accessible only by foot or private yacht.

Separated from the rest of Antigua by a lagoon, families will love Ffryes Beach. A perfect compromise between busy and balmy. The low-key locale is seldom overcrowded and is a hit with families seeking a fun spot to enjoy the sand under the shade of the sea-grapes.

The History

Another top reason to visit Antigua is the history. There are so many fascinating historical sights to explore on the island. Betty’s Hope is a sugarcane plantation dating back to 1650. Hundreds of Africans lived out their lives on this and similar plantations, first as slaves, then as laborers after their emancipation in 1834. They worked under exhausting conditions and were especially skilled as craftsmen, boilers, and distillers. Today there are over a hundred sugar mill towers dotting the countryside of Antigua, an important reminder of the days of slavery under King Sugar.

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park in English Harbour is a must-see experience while on Antigua. The Georgian-era working naval dockyard is set in some of the most stunning scenery on earth. Designated a World Heritage Site in 2016, the park is a unique combination of history, heritage, and environment with spectacular scenic beauty, beaches, and sailing. The Boats

Antigua is a haven for sailors and yachties, so if boating is your thing Antigua is your island! I highly recommend getting out on a boat during your stay, as Antigua is breathtaking from the water! While I was in Antigua I took a Calypso Cat boat tour around the island. We experienced some incredible snorkeling on stunning Cades Reef, a fabulous lunch with endless cocktails, and amazing sunset views. We even had a dance party on deck with the Calypso Cat’s very entertaining crew.

San Juan is a gorgeous, historic city with so much culture, architecture, stunning beaches, and warm locals. The best part? It’s a quick flight from the US with no passport required. Read on for my tips on how to spend a weekend in San Juan.

• Check into the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. It’s sophisticated, elegant, and beachy all rolled into one. Bask in the luxury of your well-appointed guest room complete with 300 thread-count linens, plush bedding, and spa-inspired bath. Or opt for an ocean view suite with private terrace, sweeping views of the Caribbean sea, and personal butler service. The Condado Beach Club is pure heaven with multiple pools, oceanfront dining, and beach access. Don’t even get me started on the spa…you will just have to experience it for yourself.

• Hit the Streets. Old San Juan’s historic Spanish architecture and old-world feel are not to be missed on a visit to Puerto Rico. Experience the brightly colored houses lining cobblestone streets, cool cocktail bars, and renowned Caribbean fusion restaurants with a guided foodie tour by The Spoon Experience. The Sunset Walk & Taste Tour was one of the highlights of my visit to San Juan.

• Explore By Boat. Cruise San Juan Harbor to experience the most significant monuments of Puerto Rico, including the Spanish fort of El Morro, the Governor’s mansion of La Fortaleza, and the capitol building. Or take a short ferry ride from San Juan’s neighboring town of Ceiba to Vieques, best known as the island with the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Experience this incredible phenomenon with Abe’s Snorkeling & Biobay Tours or simply enjoy the island’s gorgeous beaches with sands ranging from pure white to sparkling soft black.
• Grab a Table at a Rooftop Restaurant. San Juan’s spectacular coastline can best be viewed from above. My favorite spot in San Juan for amazing views and even better food and drinks is Kumo Rooftop. Located above the bohemian Aire De Olive boutique hotel, Kumo serves up inspiring Japanese fusion cuisine and delicious craft cocktails surrounded by the ocean breeze. What could be better?

I just returned from a relaxing solo getaway to Aruba and it couldn’t have been easier. Aruba’s easygoing vibe coupled with the friendliness of its locals make it an ideal destination for solo travel. Here are some tips for traveling solo in Aruba that allowed me to really unplug and enjoy my time there.

• Choose Your Accommodations Wisely. It’s important to select a hotel that offers security and privacy as well as casual opportunities for guests to socialize. I chose The Boardwalk Boutique Hotel as it was a small, family-owned property of individual casitas with a colorful and charming aesthetic. I stayed in the Coco Casita, which had a separate living area, private patio with hammock, and a mini kitchen fully stocked with supplies. When I arrived, a bottle of wine, complimentary snacks, and a hand-written note were waiting for me. The Boardwalk’s access to lovely Palm Beach with shady palapas and bar/food service provided by the neighboring Ritz Carlton Hotel made for an easy breezy experience. The Boardwalk’s mobile app could be used to make spa appointments, reserve beach palapas, order room-service, and even access my room.
  
  
  
  
• Pack Light. While the urge to bring every sundress and swimsuit you own is tempting, it is so important to bring only carry-on luggage if possible. You will avoid lost luggage stress and breeze through customs more easily. Aruba is a very casual island so all you really need are a couple of swimsuits, a coverup, and casual dresses for evening.
  
  
  
  
• Pick Seats Mindfully. When booking your flights be sure to reserve a seat closer to the front of the plane to avoid having the airline check your bag. This happened to me on my flight from Miami as my seat was in the rear of the plane and there was no more storage available in the overhead bins.
  
• Invest in an AirTag. If you don’t heed the above and decide to check your luggage (or the airline requires you to) be sure to have an air tag inside your bag so you can locate it in the event that it is lost.
  
• Take a Tour. A great way to see the sites and meet new people, Isla Aruba Tours offers private small-group adventure trips to experience Aruba in a more personalized, intimate way. I highly recommend the Natural Pools, Caves, and Baby Beach Tour to visit Arikok National Park and the Beach and Snorkeling Private Tour that visits Mangel Halto Beach.
  
  
  
• Hire a Driver for the Week. This is another option for exploring the island if driving in unfamiliar places is anxiety-provoking. Ask the hotel for recommendations on reliable drivers. A word about taxis – during my stay in Aruba the rates individual drivers charged were all over the place. A ten minute drive cost me $9 one day and $30 the next, as the fares in Aruba are determined by location not distance. If you plan to use taxis while on the island bring ample cash.
  
  
  
• Dine at Off-Times. To avoid walking around alone at night, go to dinner early or take a late lunch. The Boardwalk’s on-site restaurant, Eduardo’s Beach Shack, serves food from 8 am to 5 pm daily. Its healthy plant-based offerings include all-day breakfast, smoothies, acai bowls, burgers, and fish sandwiches. To experience the incredible Aruba sunsets, grab a waterside table at the Ritz Carlton or the Marriott across the street from the Boardwalk. The Ritz sushi bar is to die for.
